What is Non-Surgical Endodontics?
Endodontics is a field of dentistry pertaining to the interior of the tooth, including the pulp, nerves, blood vessels, connective tissues, the tooth root, and the root canals. Non-surgical endodontics are procedures that can be performed without a surgical incision in the mouth.
Root canal therapy is a nonsurgical endodontic procedure. Root canal therapy is required when teeth have suffered significant decay (cavity) that cannot be restored with a dental filling. Root canal therapy is also necessary if an infection develops inside a tooth. Teeth that have sustained a traumatic injury also typically require root canal therapy to save the tooth.
Benefits of Nonsurgical Endodontics
The goal of nonsurgical endodontics is to save natural teeth. Natural teeth and their roots help to maintain a strong jawbone. When teeth are lost, the jawbone begins to recede. Dr. Napoleon and his team are dedicated to saving natural teeth to preserve the jaw, stabilize adjacent teeth, and keep the facial structure intact.
Benefits of root canal therapy include:
- Nonsurgical procedure requires no downtime
- Root canal therapy requires only local anesthesia
- Root canal therapy eliminates pain
- Root canal therapy treats infections within a tooth
- Root canal therapy prevents tooth loss
- Root canal therapy takes less than 90 minutes
Nonsurgical Endodontic Procedures at Hi-Fi Dental
At Hi-Fi Dental, Dr. Napoleon is a highly experienced dentist providing nonsurgical root canal therapy. During a root canal, the interior of the tooth is accessed through a tiny hole drilled in the exterior of the tooth. Then, using specialized tiny instruments, infections, decay, and debris within the pulp of the tooth are removed.
The interior of the tooth is completely cleansed, and the root canals may be reshaped. The interior of the tooth is then filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. Finally, a dental filling or a dental crown will be placed on the treated tooth to protect the tooth.
